Background

Living History

Our block – Tobacco Row - was the site of the Philip Morris Company’s international headquarters for over 30 years, starting around 1935. By the time the company moved its headquarters in the late 1960's, it was one of the dominant companies in the tobacco industry. One of the more notable buildings in the complex is what was known as the Cardwell Machine Company building at the corner of East Cary and South 19th streets, circa 1893. Manufacturing machinery necessary for tobacco production, Cardwell was a major support industry for Tobacco Row. Prior to the full use of the 1900 blocks of East Main and East Cary by Philip Morris, other tobacco companies had factories here. Historians also believe that the Confederacy’s infamous Castle Thunder Prison was located on this site during the Civil War.
